Basketball in Coláiste Iognáid                       Basketball News

1 st Year B All-Irelands

For the first time in eight years The Jes entered a boys basketball team into a first year competition. All the way back in October the potential was evident but after a disappointing grading tournament in NUI, Galway there were concerns as to whether this potential could be realised. That tournament decided that the team could be entered in the B league or the C league. It was decided to enter the B league, and the team never looked back from that decision.

The first league match was in January against Bish B, which was won comfortably with a score of 40 – 4. This was the first time the Jes really showed good basketball skill, and it was to prove a great foundation for the West region competition. The next league match was against St. Mary’s in which the team had a very comprehensive win over the local rivals.

The final was played on the 2 nd of April in Maree against Dunmore Community School. The first two quarters were very tight, with Dunmore setting the early pace and getting the better of the Jes at half time. However, the Jes came out in the second half, and with great performances from Dylan Costelloe and James Kennedy won the third quarter by twenty points, leaving Dunmore way behind.

As only one team qualified for the All-Irelands from the West region, The Jes had the task of representing the region. These All-Irelands were held in the Canon Hayes centre in Tipperary on the 15 th and 16 th of April.

The Jes were in the perceived toughest group of the competition. The first game was against Douglas Community School from Cork, who were a very tall team and had a tough defence. With great play from Shane Garvey and Evan Wynne the Jes put up a great fight but fell just short, losing by two points. With this loss the Jes needed to win the second group match by more than four, and when the time came the players played better than they had ever played before. Pobalscoil Kenmare were a very fit and structured team, but the Jes took advantage of every opportunity and ended up winning by 18 points. Great performances came form players like Jamie Kelly and Sam Finan, but the MVP award went to Mark Naughton, who had a magnificent game rebounding every ball that came near him, and totting up a good score for himself.

The following morning saw the Jes take on St. Mary’s Grammar from Monaghan, and the Jes again performed well to secure a place in the semi-final. With a good display from Luke Casburn, John Daly and Padraig O Cosgora when he came on, the Jes were easy winners. The semi-final was going to be the tough match, with many coaches suggesting the winners would be the winners of the final.

The semi-final was against Presentation Bray, who just had an edge over the Jes in the match. The lack of experience on the part of the Jes began to show when the tough man-to-man and double-teaming the point guard left the Jes in a lot of trouble in the first half. However, in the second half the Jes did themselves very proudly, with Dylan Costelloe, Timmy Molloy and Mark Naughton coming out on top. Unfortunately they had come up against a very strong team, who ended up winning the final.

Overall it was a fantastic season for a very new team. The Jes can have great success in basketball if the dedication of the players in first year this year is shown in years to come. The current first year team have progressed to a level that could not have been imagined at the start of the year and that was due to commitment, effort and a great team spirit that never faded in any match. The team can be very proud of winning an All-Ireland bronze medal, and with the same dedication next year can go on and try to go one step further.

                                Rowing

The Jes Rowing Club will start the New Year with arguably the most successful season ever at their back.
The girls are Irish Junior Champions in 8’s and 4’s and the boys won the Novice 4 Irish Championship. Niall Kenny and Edward Fitzgerald continued onto the Coupe de la Jeunesse (European Championship) and won the silver medal, whilst five of the girls successfully represented Ireland at the Home Internationals.
The girls U18 crew are being presented with The Sports Star Award for rowing in Galway, early in the New Year.
The club retains many of last year’s winners and is therefore cautiously optimistic for this upcoming season.
Our success has been hard won not only by the rowers but also by the strenuous efforts of our coaches and committee. We wish the committee every success with their ambitious plans for the near future.
We wish to congratulate all our ‘past pupil’ rowers who are performing well at national and international level with a special word for the World Champion at this years University games in a 4 - Paul Murray.
Our thanks and good wishes go to Neasa Folan who takes up her new coaching post with the I.A.R.U in charge of the Junior Internationals and is apprentice coach to Mr. Jarling.

Premiership Tour 2008

Manchester City v Tottenham Hotspur  The Jes Soccer club had a very successful and enjoyable premiership tour on the 16 th March last.

The trip, organised by Liam Maughan, involved 41 Students, 3 teachers (Liam Maughan, Colm O Murchu and Adrian O Neill) and a parent (Seamus Kellehan) attending a live premiership match at the City of Manchester Stadium to see Man City take on Spurs. In an exciting game, which was broadcast live on Sky Sports, Man City won the match 2-1.

The students witnessed 3 great goals, 2 scored by Irish Internationals Robbie Keane and Steven Ireland as well as seeing players of the calibre of Richard Dunne, Dimitar Berbatov and Aaron Lennon on show. Before the match, we were even lucky enough to meet the controversial Manchester City owner Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra in the flesh before the game!

On day two the students were brought on a guided tour of Liverpool’s Anfield stadium and museum. Here students got to visit the player’s dressing rooms, touch the famous “This is Anfield” sign and sit in the Liverpool dugout and the famous Kop. In the museum, an array of trophies and memorabilia was on display including the original European Cup trophy, which Liverpool dramatically won in 2005.
