On the 14 th of May 2008 the Leaving Cert. students of Coláiste Iognáid took on the teachers in an end of year soccer match. The match was riveting and ended in a 0 – 2 win to the teachers. After a tough match in the blazing sunshine the teachers came out the victors.
The match began with the students putting a lot of pressure on the teachers, with the teachers struggling to clear the lines with a very strong breeze blowing against them. However with several counter attacks the teachers were getting their share of the chances, with Mr. O’Murchu just missing out on getting onto the through ball. Ronan Geraghty had a great chance to take the lead halfway through the first half, but Mr. MacAodha superbly saved his long-range shot.
Later on the first half, Joe O’Toole played a long ball through the middle, a clever lay off by Mr. O Murchu put Mr. Maughan through he ran onto and coolly slotted home to take the lead for the teachers. There was very little that the defenders could do and Adrian McPhilbin in goals was not given a chance. The first half finished out with the teachers maintaining their lead.
With the wind behind them in the second half the defenders for the teachers found it much easier to clear their lines. The students really started to exert some pressure on the teachers but some stout defending from Steve Parkinson, Hugh Lavelle and Liam Parkinson held firm minimising the chances for the students. However, with some great chances the students hit the crossbar twice and the inside of the post.
With the students missing their opportunities the teachers pushed on again with Mr. O Donnchadha winning a corner. He took the corner himself and after a flick on from Mr. Sherry, Mr. Maughan popped up for his second goal of the game and the winner for the teachers.
The students pushed on to get at least a consolation goal, but with Mr. O’Neill clearing well, Mr. Parkinson letting nothing by and midfielders such as Mr. Hackett, Mr. Harrison and staying left back held firm and held out to win 0 – 2.
